PIPPA PASSES, Ky. - In the same building where they suffered two losses last season, including a season-ending loss in the opening round of the KIAC Tournament, the University of Rio Grande men's basketball team finally managed a 2016-17 road victory.
The RedStorm jumped to a 13-point halftime advantage and went on to post a 76-61 win over Alice Lloyd College, Tuesday night, in River States Conference action at the Grady Nutt Athletic Center.
Rio Grande snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, improving to 6-14 overall and 3-5 in league play.
Alice Lloyd slipped to 5-14 overall and 3-6 in the RSC with the loss.
The Eagles' lone lead of the night came at 4-2 just over three minutes into the contest.
Rio led by no less than nine points at any stage of the second half and enjoyed its largest lead of 17 points, 66-49, after senior Josh Thompson (Bronx, NY) canned two free throws with 7:22 remaining in the game.
The RedStorm survived 23 turnovers by going 23-for-25 at the free throw line and outrebounding their hosts, 38-22.
Junior Will Hill (Worthington, OH) scored a game-high 29 points to lead the winning effort, connecting on four three-pointers and going 13-for-13 at the free throw line.
Freshman Stanley Christian (Norfolk, VA) added 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds for Rio, while junior DeVon Price (Pickerington, OH) had a game-best five assists.
Jake Allen led ALC with 15 points, while Blake Smith added 11 points, a team-best six rebounds and a game-high three blocks.
Austin Crisp added 10 points in a losing cause for the Eagles, which went 11-for-32 from the field (34.3%), 2-for-10 from three-point range (20.0%) and 7-for-13 at the free throw line (53.8%).
Rio Grande returns to action on Friday night, traveling to Midway University for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
