RedStorm women's soccer signs third recruit

Rio Grande --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm women's soccer team has signed a third recruit to its 2010 class with the addition of Mary Beth Schramm of Marietta High School.

Schramm, a 5'8" midfielder, was a two-time captain for the Lady Tigers. She earned 1st team All-Southeastern Ohio Athletic League (SEOAL) honors as a senior and was named 2nd team all-district. She captured 1st team All-SEOAL accolades as a sophomore and was honorable mention all-district. She missed her entire junior season with an injury.

"I'm very excited and looking forward to my upcoming seasons with the RedStorm," Schramm said.

She talked about the deciding factors in her choosing Rio Grande. "The coaches were extremely nice, the campus was a good distance from home, but still close enough and I know that I can get a good education from Rio."

Rio Grande head coach Amber Oliver is putting together a very solid recruiting class and Oliver sees Schramm making a difference for Rio Grande very quickly. "I am very excited to be signing Mary - she is a very talented player.  She will make an immediate impact on our team," Oliver said.

"Mary's a great player that has the ability and desire to win every ball and is not afraid of contact," Oliver added. "Her best asset as a player is her size and physical style of play.   She is the type of player that can create for herself or her teammates.   I look forward to seeing great things from Mary this season."

Schramm's description of herself is very similar to that of Coach Oliver, as an aggressive player. She also pinpointed what she feels she needs to improve on to be successful at the collegiate level. "I'm aggressive and I feel that I can see the field and the players around me," she said. "I feel I need to work on getting in shape and finishing my shots."

Schramm has some familiarity with Rio Grande - she plays on a club team coached by assistant coach Callum Morris and Rio Grande men's soccer assistant coach Tony Daniels.

The latest Rio Grande recruit wants to make an impact on the team and have some fun in the process. "My goals are to enjoy my time there and to make an impact while I'm on the field," she said.

Schramm was not exact on her major, but does have it narrowed down. "Nursing, biology or radiology, something health related," she said.

Mary Beth is the daughter of Phil and Mollie Schramm of Marietta.

Schramm joins Cassie Kyle of Waverly and Alexandria Davis of Teays Valley High School as the current members of what is shaping up to be a very impressive Rio Grande recruiting class.
