RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Nikki Polens' goal with just over 16 minutes remaining in the first half snapped a scoreless tie and gave Point Park University a 1-0 win over the University of Rio Grande, Sunday afternoon, in River States Conference women's soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
The Pioneers won for the fourt time in their last five outings, improving to 6-7-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
Rio Grande slipped to 3-11-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the RSC with the loss.
The setback also put the RedStorm in peril of failing to qualify for the league's post-season tournament. Currently, head coach Tony Daniels' club is percentage points behind Midway for the sixth and final spot in the tourney, with only games at Cincinnati Christian - which is one-half game behind Midway and Rio for the final spot - and at defending league champion Asbury left on the schedule.
Polens blasted the rebound of a shot by teammate Gabby Widman past Rio freshman goal keeper Alli Jones (Chillicothe, OH) - after Jones couldn't maintain control of Widman attempt - with 16:04 left before intermission.
Point Park made the lead stand up, limiting the RedStorm to just one shot in the contest. The Pioneers finished with an 18-1 advantage in shots and a 6-0 cushion in shots on frame.
Rebecca Cohen went the distance in goal to earn the win for the Pioneers.
Jones saved four shots before giving way at halftime to junior Kristin Garn (Morrow, OH), who recorded one save of her own.
Thursday's game against Cincinnati Christian kicks off at 5 p.m. at the Blue Ash Sports Complex.
