RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Three University of Rio Grande runners finished in a virtual dead heat for first place, as the RedStorm men's cross country team took top honors in the 2nd Annual RedStorm Classic, Friday afternoon, at a wet and chilly Rio Grande Cross Country Course.
Sophomore Kameron Carpenter (Newark, OH) and seniors Blake Freed (Uhrichsville, OH) and Dallas Guy (Buffalo, OH) all posted identical times of 27:15.90 on the 8K course, with timing officials declaring Carpenter the winner, Freed second and Guy third.
Sophomore Mike Norris (Dayton, OH) took fourth place in 27:18, while Ohio Christian University's Kyle Benecke kept the RedStorm from posting a perfect score by finishing fifth in 27:23.
Rio Grande tallied 16 points as a team, while Ohio Christian was second with 45 points. Bluefield (Va.) College also had runners in the race, but did not post a team score.
Also representing Rio Grande in the event was senior Kyle Sanborn (Dover, OH), who placed sixth in 27:35; senior Dustin Moritz (Ironton, OH) and freshman River Spicer (West Milton, OH), who were 11th and 12th, respectively, in 29:38.30; and freshman Ethan Greenawalt (Longwood, FL), who was 14th in 33:11.
Former Rio Grande runner Matt Engstrom (Dover, OH), who ran unattached, finished seventh in a time of 27:54.
Rio Grande will next be in action at the River States Conference Championship Meet on November 5 in Beckley, W.Va.
