WILMINGTON, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande men's cross country team recorded a second place finish in Friday's Jenna Strong Fall Classic hosted by Wilmington College.
The RedStorm tallied 116 points as a team in the 38-school field, finishing behind only rival Shawnee State's total of 75.
Senior Blake Freed (Uhrichsville, OH) had Rio's top finish individually, placing fifth among the 399 runners on the 8k course with a time of 25:16. He was the top finisher among those runners from NAIA schools.
The RedStorm also got top 10 showings from senior Dallas Guy (Buffalo, OH) and sophomore Kameron Carpenter (Newark, OH), who placed eighth and ninth, respectively, with times of 25:20 and 25:22.
Also competing for Rio in the event were senior Kyle Sanborn (Dover, OH), who placed 51st with a time of 26:22; senior Dustin Moritz (Ironton, OH), who was 60th in 26:27; sophomore Mike Norris (Dayton, OH), who was 69th after crossing the line in 26:39; freshman River Spicer (West Milton, OH), who crossed 201st in a time of 28:22; and freshman Ethan Greenawalt (Longwood, FL), who was 302nd with a time of 30:47.
A trio of NCAA Division I programs - Miami-Ohio (116), Austin Peay (196) and Wright State (200) - finished behind Rio to complete the top five.
Joseph Mullen, who ran unattached, had the best individual finish with a mark of 24:44. The top individual to score was runner-up Jonathan Allen of Findlay University, who crossed the line in 24:59.
Rio Grande returns to action on Friday, Oct. 21 when it hosts the RedStorm Classic.
