RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande women's cross country team opened the 2016 season in successful fashion, posting a first-place finish at the 46th Annual Rio Grande/Patty Forgey Cross Country Invitational, Saturday afternoon, at the University of Rio Grande.
Sophomore Lucy Williams (Athens, OH) led the RedStorm, - which had each of the top three finishers and six of the top nine - by taking first place individually for the second straight year, completing the 5K course in 20:08. The RedStorm also had sophomore Maggie Dellinger (Washington Court House, OH) and junior Keri Lawrence (Reedsville, OH) take second and third place, respectively, with times of 20:22 and 20:31.
Rio Grande finished with 21 points on the day, while Ohio Valley University (42 pts.) and the University of Pikeville (70 pts.) rounded out the team totals.
The RedStorm's team score also included junior Rachel Ball (Chillicothe, OH), who was seventh with a time of 21:15; junior Aubrey Dunfee (Baltimore, OH), who placed eighth with a time of 21:27; junior Emili Sannes (Carlisle, OH), who was ninth with a finish of 22:15; senior Katie Glover (Ashville, OH), who was 11th with a time of 22:37; senior Alex Ellis (Ona, WV), who placed 13th in a time of 24:12; freshman Reaghan Haines (Hillsboro, OH), who was 15th with a finish of 25:05; and senior Clarissa Kosnich (Hillsboro, OH), who was 21st after finishing in 28:28.
Liberty-Union won the girls' high school division title in convincing fashion with 33 points, with Reedsville Eastern (79) and Fairland (88) rounding out the top three. Liberty-Union's Sydnee Mangette took top individual honors in 18:31.
The junior high/middle school girls' crown went to Williamstown (W.Va.), with Hurricane (W.Va.) and Ripley (W.Va.) rounding out the top three.
Williamstown's Ella Hesson took first place among individuals on the 3k course with a time of 12:33.
The event attracted more than 900 runners from 55 schools in six different divisions.
Rio Grande will return to action on Friday in the All-Ohio Championship at Cedarville.
