RedStorm split at Georgetown

Georgetown, Ky. --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm softball team spilt with Georgetown College in the first two games of a four-game weekend set within the Mid-South Conference on Friday afternoon. Georgetown took the first game, 4-0, but Rio responded with an 8-3 triumph in game two.

The game one loss was the first inside the conference for the RedStorm (10-6, 5-1 MSC) this season as Rio's offense continued to struggle. Rio was limited to three hits, two of which were doubles by senior catcher Kaylyn Heading (Hilliard, OH) and sophomore pitcher Anna Smith (Ross, OH).

 

Smith (6-4) suffered the loss for Rio Grande as she gave up 11 hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out four batters. 

 

Rio is now is in a first place tie with the University of the Cumberlands in the standings with a 5-1 conference mark. 

 

Georgetown College (7-13, 1-3 MSC) was able to get into the win column for the first time in MSC play with the first game shutout. 

 

Rio's bats came alive in the second game, scoring eight runs, which was more than the RedStorm had scored in the previous five games combined. 

 

Senior leftfielder Leah Hamman (Lexington, OH), who has been a consistent bat throughout the rough stretch, led the way for the RedStorm. She was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and had three stolen bases. 

 

Junior shortstop Amber Bowman (Hebron, OH) had a big game, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and Heading clubbed her fourth home run of the season with a three-run blast. 

 

Smith and freshman centerfielder Jessica Gall (Mt. Vernon, OH) both went 2-for-4 at the plate.   

 

Sophomore hurler Allison Mills (West Chester, OH) won for the second time in a row by authoring a complete game six-hitter. Mills (4-2) allowed three runs (two earned) with one walk and five strikeouts. 

 

Rio improved to 7-3 on the road this season with the split.

 

The two teams will square off again on Saturday with the first game set to begin at 12 Noon.
