RedStorm baseball edges Grand View

Ormond Beach, Fl. --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm baseball team continued their successful spring trip with a 6-4 victory over Grand View on Tuesday afternoon.

 

Rio Grande (17-4) laced up the hitting shoes as it produced 12 hits in the game. Junior shortstop Brad Konrad (Maumee, OH) had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in. Junior second baseman Christian Frias (Salinas, PR) also recorded three hits in four at-bats.

 

Senior designated hitter Chris Mahon (Hamilton, OH) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, junior leftfielder Michael Lynch (Lyndhurst, OH) was 1-for-4 with an RBI and senior third baseman Tyler Schunk (Cincinnati, OH) was 1-for-4 and drove in the other Rio run.

 

Senior catcher Tyler Plumpton (Peterborough, ONT) collected two hits in four at-bats with one double. 

 

Junior righthander Desmond Sullivan (Scarborough, ONT) started the game for the RedStorm and kept his team in the ballgame, despite struggling with his command. He lasted 5 innings, scattering six hits and allowing four walks. He struck out three and yielded two unearned runs. Rio trailed 2-0 when Sullivan left the game.

 

The RedStorm broke through with four runs in the 6th only to see Grand View fight back to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the seventh.

 

Schunk came on in relief of Sullivan and picked up the win. Schunk (4-1) pitched four innings, allowing three hits and two runs with four strikeouts and one walk.

 

Rio is 2-0 versus Grand View this season. The RedStorm trumped the Vikings on Sunday by an 11-3 score. 

 

The RedStorm will be back in action on Wednesday in a doubleheader versus Ashford University. The first game is slated for 10 a.m. Stretch Internet will provide play-by-play coverage beginning at 9:55 a.m.
