Tough day for Rio softball
Nashville, Tn. --- It was a tough day for the University of Rio Grande RedStorm softball team as they dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Trevecca Nazarene on Monday afternoon. Rio lost the first game, 8-0 in a five-inning mercy rule and lost the second game by a 9-1 score.
Rio Grande (8-4) was only able to muster one hit in the first game loss - a single by junior shortstop Amber Bowman (Hebron, OH).
Sophomore hurler Anna Smith (Ross, OH) lost for only the second time this season in eight decisions. Smith allowed nine hits and eight runs (seven earned) in five innings of pitching. She struggled with her control, yielding four walks and striking out only two. Smith also surrendered three home runs.
The RedStorm fared only marginally better in the second game, recording four hits. Senior catcher Kaylyn Heading (Hilliard, OH) was 1-for-3 and clubbed her third home run on the road trip for Rio's only marker of the game.
Bowman, senior centerfielder Leah Hamman (Lexington, OH) and freshman leftfielder Kaitie Stewart (Pleasant Hill, OH) all went 1-for-3 in the game.
Sophomore Allison Mills (West Chester, OH) fell to 2-2 on the season. She pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and nine runs (eight runs) with two strikeouts and five walks.
Trevecca Nazarene improves to 17-2 on the season.
Rio Grande will return home to face Madonna University on Thursday (March 18) at Stanley Evans Field. Game one is set to begin at 2 p.m. Stretch Internet will have play-by-play coverage beginning at 1:55 p.m.
