RedStorm sweep Pikeville College
Pikeville, Ky. --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm softball team bounced back from being swept on Friday at home versus Fairmont State to score a doubleheader sweep of Pikeville College on Saturday afternoon. Rio won the first game, 9-1 and captured the second game, 3-2 to improve to 4-0 in Mid-South Conference play.
Rio Grande (6-2, 4-0 MSC) had a one-person wrecking crew in sophomore pitcher Anna Smith (Ross, OH). Smith (5-1) went the distance in the first game, scattering four hits and allowing one earned run in seven innings. She struck out eight batters. At the plate, Smith helped her own cause, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
Senior centerfielder Leah Hamman (Lexington, OH) continued her hot start to the season as she went 2-for-3.
Game two was a close encounter with Rio Grande pulling out the game late. Smith picked up the win in relief, firing three shutout innings. Smith yielded only one hit in the game.
Sophomore Allison Mills (West Chester, OH) started and pitched four innings. She kept the RedStorm in the game, giving up only six hits and two runs. The score was tied at 2-2 when she left the game.
Sophomore rightfielder Marissa Lennox (Gahanna, OH) swung the big bat for Rio Grande. She went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI's. Freshman rightfielder Kaitie Stewart (Pleasant Hill, OH) was 1-for-2.
Rio steps out of conference to play Cumberland (TN) University on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. EDT.
