Rio track competes at Kent State Tune Up

Rio Grande --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm men's and women's track and field squads competed at the Kent State Tune Up on Saturday. This was a non-scoring meet but both the men's and women's teams produced some outstanding performances.

On the women's side, Cassie Mattia (West Chester, OH) hit the"B" standard for the NAIA Indoor National Meet in the 800-meter run and very nearly broke the school record. She finished 11th with a time of 2:20.91. The school record is 2:20.64 set by Anne Marie Hynes in 1997.

Sophomore Kayla Graves (Chillicothe, OH) placed fifth in the women's 300-meter dash with a time of 43.77.

Other women's results: freshman Amy Lower (Lancaster, OH), 18th in the 1,000-meter run (3:24.97); junior Hillary Haines (McConnellsville, OH), 19th in the 1,000-meter run (3:51.12); freshman Kim Strunk (Milford, OH), 25th in the shot put (35 feet, 11 ¼ inches); sophomore Tracie Brown (Logan, OH), 35th in the shot put (34 feet, 4 ¼ inches) and 35th in the weight throw (38 feet, 1 ¼ inches); sophomore Molly Roark (South Webster, OH), 46th in the 400-meter dash (1:05.70); junior Beth Hysell (Pomeroy, OH), 48th in the 1-mile run (6:19.12); sophomore Cory Crutcher (Eaton, OH), 42nd in the weight throw (33 feet, 4 ¾ inches) and 50th in the shot put (25 feet, 9 ¼ inches); sophomore Danielle Stockham (London, OH), 52nd in the 1-mlle run (6:46.58).

"We ran very well, we almost had two school records go down and Cassie (Mattia) hit the "B" standard in the 800," said Rio Grande head coach Bob Willey. "It was a good meet for us."

"We had several runners get PR's (personal records) and had some improve on their times," Willey added. "We were very pleased with how our young men and young ladies performed."

Rio Grande will now prepare for the NAIA Indoor National Meet, March 4-6 in Johnson City, TN. The RedStorm will have three competitors at the national meet. Senior racewalker Kyle Hively (Vinton, OH) will compete in the 3,000-meter race walk and Woodfork will run in the 200-meter event.

Mattia will compete in both the 600 and 800-meters at the Women's National Championships.
