RedStorm take down WVU Tech
Rio Grande --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm women's basketball team was back at the friendly confines of the Newt Oliver Arena on Saturday afternoon to face off with visiting WVU Tech. Rio Grande was able to get back on the winning side of the ledger with an 80-59 victory.
The game was tight early as the two teams traded baskets on nearly every possession. The score was tied five times in the first half before Rio gained control of the game. Leading 22-18, the RedStorm pushed the lead to 33-18 on the strength of an 11-0 run.
Rio Grande (14-10, 5-3 MSC) led 42-30 at the half. Junior guard Jenna Smith scored 12 of her 23 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point land in the opening half. Smith also dished out seven assists and went 7-of-10 from long range for the game.
Junior forward Leah Kendro (Strongsville, OH) added 17 points and junior point guard Bre Davis (Marietta, OH) nearly recorded a triple-double with 13 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. What added to Davis' tremendous performance was that she only amassed one turnover in the game.
Rio posted 23 assists total and turned the ball over only 18 times.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the RedStorm. Rio is now 7-3 at home this season.
"It was a great win and we needed it," said Rio Grande head coach David Smalley. "Bre Davis had a tremendous game, nine assists and one turnover and I want to check the film, because I don't remember it, she was great today."
"Jenna Smith shot the ball extremely well, I think she wanted redemption, because she did not shoot well at Georgetown on Thursday," Smalley added. "Our bench played well and we had a good game plan."
"When we shoot the ball well we are tough to beat and we were able to do that today," Smalley said.
The Golden Bears were able to get back into the game for a brief time in the second half as they cut the deficit to eight points at 43-35.
WVU Tech (9-14, 0-8 MSC) placed three players in double figures led by Style Harper's 17 points. Shyla Jones added 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Kelli Morgan chipped in 11 points off the bench. Ashley Blaney led all players with 15 rebounds.
WVU Tech out-rebounded Rio Grande, 42-39.
Rio will be back on the road on Thursday night at Lindsey Wilson College. Rio opened the Mid-South Conference season with a 79-67 win over the Blue Raiders on January 14.
