LANCASTER, Ohio - University of Rio Grande head softball coach Kristen Bradshaw has announced the signing of former Lancaster High School standout Jenna Jones for the 2014 season.
Jones, a 5-foot-8 pitcher/shortstop, originally had plans of playing at NCAA Division II University of Indianapolis following the completion of her prep career with head coach Greg Rosser's Golden Gales in 2012.
However, the opportunity fizzled and Jones did not play this spring.
Signing with Rio Grande provides a second chance to fulfill a long-time goal.
"Softball is a game that I would like to play for the rest of my life. Rio Grande seems like a great place to continue that goal," Jones said. "Playing collegiately has been a dream of mine since high school because that's when it became an important part of my life."
As a senior, Jones was a first team All-Ohio Capital Conference selection, while also being named to the All-Central District second team and earning an Honorable Mention selection to the Columbus Dispatch All-Metro team.
"Jenna is going to be a huge part of our success this season," Bradshaw said. "She'll be one of the top pitchers and, when not pitching, I see her playing somewhere in the infield. She's a natural athlete with a great attitude who's going to help us out tremendously."
Jones, who plans to major in Business Management with a minor in Sports & Exercise Science, said the decision to sign with the RedStorm was the best fit for her personally, as well as financially.
Regardless of the reason, she's excited to get her Rio playing career started.
"I feel like I can help provide depth in terms of pitching," Jones said. "I know I can work on my batting, but my ultimate goal is to continue to develop as a player overall."
Jones is the daughter of Jared and Angela Jones of Lancaster.
