RedStorm play better but still lose at Cedarville

Cedarville, Oh. --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm men's basketball team played better this time around but it still was not enough to claim a victory versus the Cedarville Yellow Jackets on Friday night at the Cedarville Invitational. Cedarville won the game, 96-72.

Rio Grande (3-3) played well early and held the lead for the first 5:11 of the game. Once Cedarville (3-2) was able to get control the RedStorm would never see the lead again in losing for the second straight game.

The Yellow Jackets changed tactics, going inside and attacking the basket, as opposed to the three-point barrage they went on in the first match between the two schools November 7. Cedarville took a 51-32 lead to halftime.

Rio Grande continued to battle in the second half and showed some flashes, but just did not have enough firepower to take down Cedarville.

The RedStorm had three players in double players led by junior guard Doug Campbell (Salisbury, NC) with 20 points. Sophomore forward Bud Teer (Cleveland, OH) racked another double-double in a losing effort with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard P.J. Rase (Wheelersburg, OH) added 10 points. Junior forward Meau Jones (Hartwell, GA) was on the verge of double figures as he scored nine points off the bench.

Sophomore point guard Brad Cubbie (Dayton, OH) led the RedStorm with five assists.

Cedarville placed four players in double figures with RicardoAlliman out-scoring all players with 24 points. He also registered nine rebounds. Chris Beals added 15 points and Derrick Hannon chipped in 14 points and dished out six assists. Austin Foote tossed in 10 points off the bench.

"We played better, but we still have work to do," said Rio Grande head coach Ken French. "We're a young team and we have to learn from this and we will."

Cedarville held a 45-35 advantage in rebounding, which proved to be a big factor in the game and the Yellow Jackets generated eight steals which they cashed in on with points on nearly theft in helping to increase the lead.

Rio Grande will face another former American Mideast Conference foe in Point Park on Saturday in the consolation game. The Pioneers lost the first game of the night, 72-62 to Trevecca Nazarene.
