RedStorm ousted from MSC Tournament

Georgetown, Ky. --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm men's soccer team, ranked No. 6 in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll and the No. 2 seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament, was ousted from the tournament semifinals on Thursday afternoon by No. 3 seed University of the Cumberlands by a 3-1 score. The match was played at Toyota Stadium.

Rio Grande (15-3-2) fell behind early when Cumberlands (15-4-1) scored in the 5th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The RedStorm quickly tied the game in the 9th minute when junior forward and reigning Mid-South Conference Player of the Week Ederson Lopes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored an unassisted goal. It was the seventh goal in the last two games for Lopes.

The score remained knotted at 1-1 until the 57th minute when Cumberlands took the lead
for good on a goal from Igor Petsch.

The Patriots would add an insurance goal in the 86th minute and sealed Rio Grande's
fate. Mamadou Camara scored two goals to lead the Patriots to the upset.

Rio sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Lower (South Webster, OH) had one save while Cumberlands goalkeeper Dennis Kramer stopped four shots.

Rio had plenty of chances to score as it out-shot Cumberlands 13-4 and held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.

The RedStorm must now play the waiting game and hope that the No. 6 national ranking will be good enough to land them in the NAIA National Tournament for a ninth straight year.
