Pittsburgh, Pa. --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm women's basketball team began the 2009-10 season with a victory on the road downing Carlow 70-38 at Oakland Catholic High School on Saturday afternoon.

Rio Grande (1-0) built a 35-22 lead at the half and then proceeded to bury Carlow (0-1) in the second half, holding the Celtics to only 16 points and 19 percent (7-of-36) shooting from the field.

Rio had two players score in double figures led by junior center Ashley Saunders (Amanda, OH) with 12 points. Junior guard Jenna Smith (Bellefontaine, OH) added 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor, including 3-for-3 from three-point land. Smith also handed out, a game-high, five assists.

The RedStorm had four other players on the verge of double figures with juniors Bre Davis (Marietta, OH) and Leah Kendro (Strongsville, OH) and freshmen Olivia Brown (Maple Heights, OH) and Ediesha Cole (Cleveland, OH) all tossing in eight points each. Cole led the RedStorm in rebounding with five.

Rio had only three turnovers on the night, compared to 15 for the Celtics. The RedStorm didn't shoot that well, connecting on only 23-of-62 shots (37.1 percent), but did hit 5-of-9 (55.6 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.
