GEORGETOWN, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande volleyball team picked up a pair of wins in three tries over the weekend in a Mid-South Conference crossover event hosted by Georgetown College.
The RedStorm posted a 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18) win over St. Catharine and a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-17) victory over Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Friday night before dropping a 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-21) decision to the host Tigers on Saturday.
Head coach Billina Donaldson's squad improved to 13-7 overall and 4-2 in the MSC with its weekend performance. Senior outside hitter Whitney Smith (Albany, OH) had 16 kills in the win over St. Catharine, while sophomore middle blocker Betsy Schramm (Marietta) and senior middle blocker Erin Sherman (South Webster, OH) added 15 kills each. Sherman also had a match-best seven blocks.
Junior setters Kayla Landaker (Coshocton, OH) and Kelsey Martin (Jackson, OH) contributed 30 and 20 assists, respectively, to the winning effort, while junior defensive specialist Nicole Ogg (Albany, OH) had a team-best 16 digs and three service aces.
Casey Stone had 13 kills to pace the Patriots in a losing cause, while Chelsea Wichman was credited with 42 assists and Randa Murphy had 12 digs.
Smith had nine kills and 10 digs, while Schramm added eight kills of her own in the win over Cumberland.
Sherman and freshman middle blocker Alex Phillips (Williamsport, OH) had four blocks each against the Bulldogs, while Landaker and Martin finished with 14 and 10 assists, respectively.
Rylee Butler had five kills to lead CU and Desirae Burns tallied 10 assists in a losing cause.
In Saturday's loss to league-leading Georgetown, Schramm and Sherman had eight kills apiece and sophomore middle blocker Morgan Daniels (Gallipolis, OH) had three blocks to lead the RedStorm.
Smith had a team-high 10 digs and three aces, while Landaker had 18 assists and Martin finished with 13.
Caroline Maher and Rachel Eubanks had 11 kills each for the Tigers, while Lindsey Martindale and Stephanie Gurren finished with 23 and 14 assists, respectively. Rebekah Moore also had a match-high 20 digs for GC.
Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday night, hosting the University of Pikeville in a Mid-South Conference match at the Newt Oliver Arena.
