RedStorm women prepare for first ever post-season action
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande RedStorm women's soccer team will be involved in the post-season for the first time in school history on Friday when they travel to Lindsey Wilson to play in the opening round of the 2009 Mid-South Conference Women's Soccer Tournament. The tournament's top four seeds host this weekend with the winners advancing to Lexington, KY for the semifinals and finals next week.
NAIA No. 1 and top seeded Lindsey Wilson College (15-2-1, 7-0 MSC) hosts No. 8 seed Rio Grande (1-15-1, 0-7) at 4 p.m. ET in a first round on Friday. The Blue Raiders, winners of the MSC regular season championship, defeated Rio Grande 11-0 on Oct. 15 at Evan Davis Field.
"We told the girls after the last game that we do have a big task at hand," said Rio Grande head coach Amber Oliver speaking about the first ever post-season appearance. "We're playing the number one team in the nation again, we told them we need them to show up and be ready to practice because we are really going to focusing."
"We want to do well in the tournament," Oliver added.
The rest of the tournament is as follows: No. 4 seed WVU Tech (8-5-3, 4-2-1) plays host to No. 5-seed Campbellsville University (11-6-1, 3-4).
No. 2 seed University of the Cumberlands (10-5-1, 5-1-1) entertains No. 7 seed Pikeville College (6-9-2, 1-6) at 1 p.m. ET on Friday.
No. 3-seed Georgetown College (11-7, 5-2) hosts No. 6 seed St. Catharine College (7-8-2, 2-5) in the final quarterfinal match.
The winner of the Cumberlands-Pikeville match faces the winner of the Georgetown-St. Catharine match in the second semifinal next week.
The tournament final is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 13.
