BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - The University of Rio Grande volleyball team ran its win streak to four straight on Tuesday night, cruising to a 3-1 Mid-South Conference win over Bluefield (Va.) College at Dome Gymnasium.
The RedStorm improved to 10-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win. Rio won each of the opening two games, 25-20, but the Rams avoided a sweep by jumping to a 9-1 lead and posting an eventual 25-18 triumph in game three.
The RedStorm finished things off in game four, racing to an 8-0 lead out of the gate and cruising to a 25-14 victory to finish off the match.
Bluefield, which dropped to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the MSC, had not lost a set in its first two league contests.
Senior outside hitter Whitney Smith (Albany, OH) and senior middle blocker Erin Sherman (South Webster, OH) had 16 kills each in the win for Rio, while sophomore middle blocker Betsy Schramm (Marietta, OH) added a dozen kills of her own.
Sherman and Schramm also had two blocks each, tying sophomore middle blocker Morgan Daniels (Gallipolis, OH) for team-high honors.
Junior setters Kelsey Martin (Jackson, OH) and Kayla Landaker (Coshocton, OH) had 37 and 15 assists, respectively, while junior defensive specialist Nicole Ogg (Albany, OH) led the RedStorm with 16 digs and a trio of service aces.
Jasmine Morrow had 17 kills and 10 digs in a losing cause for the Rams. Cheznee Daily added 29 assists and 13 digs, while Hannah Winter had 20 digs and Colby Combs finished with 19 digs and four aces.
Amber Taylor-Inge paced BC with a match-high five blocks.
Rio Grande returns to action tonight, at 7 p.m., hosting WVU-Tech at the Newt Oliver Arena. The RedStorm posted a 3-0 win in the previous meeting on Sept. 11 in Montgomery, W.Va.
