RIO GRANDE, Ohio - With a showdown against top-ranked - and arch-rival - Lindsey Wilson College looming on Saturday, the University of Rio Grande men's soccer team puts a seven-game win streak on the line Wednesday evening when it travels to St. Catharine College for a Mid-South Conference tilt.
Kickoff is set for approximately 5 p.m. at Barber Soccer Complex. The game will follow the women's contest between the two schools, which is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
The RedStorm, who are ranked No. 2 in the NAIA coaches poll, ran their record to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in conference action with a 6-0 pounding of Georgetown College on Saturday.
Senior forward Richard Isberner (Sao Paulo, Brazil) earned MSC Offensive Player of the Week honors with his second straight two-goal, one-assist performance as part of Saturday's win. Senior midfielder Oliver Hewitt-Fisher (Swansea, Wales) added a goal and two assists in the victory.
Isberner has taken over the team lead in points with 14 (six goals, two assists) and is tied for the team lead in goals scored with junior midfielder Maxi Viera (Montevideo, Uruguay). Sophomore midfielder Caio Cruz (Brazil) is third on the team in scoring with nine points (three goals, three assists).
Cruz and Viera also had one goal each in Saturday's win.
Senior goal keeper Jack Marchant (Leeds, England) and sophomore net-minder Jon Dodson (Tiffin, OH) teamed for a third straight shutout and a fourth blanking of the opposition in the last five outings.
St. Catharine has rebounded from a 1-3 start to win four of its last five outings, including a 3-0 win over Shawnee State on Saturday which evened the Patriots' league mark at 1-1.
Sophomore forward Ashley Woods is the top offensive threat for head coach Tim Wolz's club, scoring nine goals and assisting on six others. He ranks third in the MSC in goals scored and leads the conference in assists.
Also scoring in double figures for SCC is senior forward Isaac Blanford and junior forward Sawyer Abshire. Blanford has five goals and a pair of assists, while Abshire has scored four times and assisted on three other scores.
Junior goal keeper C.J. Powell has seen the bulk of the action among the three net-minders the Patriots have used this season. He has allowed 22 goals, saved 35 shots and has a .614 save percentage.
Rio Grande blitzed the Patriots in both meetings last season, winning 17-1 in a regular season game at St. Catharine and rolling to a 14-0 win at home in the opening round of the MSC Tournament.
