RIO GRANDE, Ohio - University of Rio Grande seniors Nick Wilson and Kayla Renner took top individual honors in their respective divisions and the RedStorm captured a team championship on the men's side at the 42nd Annual Rio Grande/Patty Forgey Cross Country Invitational, Saturday afternoon, at the University of Rio Grande. Renner (Galloway, OH) completed the 5K women's course in a time of 20:32, easily outdistancing Campbellsville's Sarah Johnson, who took runner-up honors at 21:08. Ohio Christian's Brooke Gardner was third at 21:21.
Rio Grande had three others in the 41-runner women's field. Junior Amy Lower (Lancaster, OH) was fifth at 21:50, junior Brittany Piccone (Crooksville, OH) was ninth at 22:39 and senior Danielle Stockham (London, OH) was 26th with a time of 26:14.
Wilson (Barlow, OH) crossed the finish line in the men's 8K race in a time of 27:17, topping junior teammate Joe Taranto (Pickerington, OH) by 21 seconds. Brett Pierce of Campbellsville finished third at 28:05.
The RedStorm also filled positions 6-8 with senior Chad McCarty (Bethel, OH) at 28:40, freshman Kyle Sanborn (Dover, OH) at 28:41 and sophomore Dustin Moritz (Ironton, OH) at 28:57. Freshman Caleb Greer (Orrville, OH) placed 23rd with a finish of 33:05.
Rio Grande had a team score of 24 in the men's division, with Campbellsville (31) and WVU Tech (104) rounding out the top three.
Campbellsville's total of 19 led the women's team scores, with Ohio Christian University (65) edging Cumberland (Tenn.) University (67) for second place.
Cabell Midland (W.Va.) topped Thomas Worthington and Fairland for the boys' high school Red division title, while Belpre outdistanced West Branch and Fairfield Union for the boys' White division crown. Raine Wireman of Fairland High School was the top individual finisher in the Red division with a time of 16:44, while Drake Lohnes of West Branch topped the White bracket in 17:08.
Hurricane (W.Va.), Thomas Worthington and Athens claimed the top three spot in the girls' high school Red division, with Reedsville Eastern, Caldwell and Manchester forming the top trio in the girls' White bracket. Hurricane's Tori Dent had the fastest time in the Red division at 19:37, while Fairfield Union's Jessica Swaim won the girls' White division by crossing the line in 20:13.
A trio of West Virginia teams-Milton, Winfield and Hurricane-led the junior high boys' team totals, with Hurricane (W.Va.), Winfield (W.Va.) and Athens rounding out the top three among the junior high girls' teams. Braxton McMillion of George Washington (W.Va.) won the boys' individual title with a finish of 10:57, while Hurricane's Taylor Walroth won the girls individual crown in a time of 12:56.
The event attracted nearly 80 teams and 1,500 runners in the eight divisions.
