RIO GRANDE, Ohio - It's safe to say that Saturday night's meeting with Georgetown College is big for the University of Rio Grande women's soccer team.
The RedStorm will have chance to climb over the .500 mark this late into the season for the first time in the program's history, while at the same time avenging a pair of heart-breaking losses to GC last year and spoiling Homecoming for the Tigers when the two squads square off in a 6 p.m. kickoff at iHigh Field. Rio Grande evened its record at 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-South Conference with a 9-3 rout of the University of the Cumberlands on Wednesday night. The nine goals set a new single-game school record.
Freshman forward Kasey Crow (Chillicothe, OH) tied a school record with four goals - a record established one week earlier by fellow freshman Courtney Young in a win over Kentucky Christian. She also added an assist, establishing a new school record for points in a game with nine.
Junior forward Alex Davis (Ashville, OH) added three goals and an assist in the win for the RedStorm.
Georgetown is 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the MSC following a 2-0 win at the University of Pikeville on Wednesday. It was the third straight win for the Tigers, who have allowed just one goal since a season-opening 1-0 loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Sophomore midfielder Bea Cameron leads the way offensively for GC with a pair of goals and an assist, while Alessandra Jansen has one goal and an assist to her credit.
The Tigers defeated the RedStorm twice last season, scoring a 2-1 win in the regular season at Rio and a 2-0 win - with both goals coming in the game's final 3-1/2 minutes - in the quarterfinal round of the MSC Tournament.
A win on Saturday would put Rio Grande over the .500 mark beyond the six-game point of any season for the first time in program history.
