RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande men's soccer team puts its brand new No. 2 ranking on the line Wednesday night, as the RedStorm faces Vanguard (Calif.) University at Lindsey Wilson College's Walter C. Reuling Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. Head coach Scott Morrissey's team vaulted three spots in the latest NAIA coaches' poll on Tuesday after routing Daemen College, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Rio Grande, ranked No. 4 in the preseason and No. 5 in the first regular season poll last week, has won three straight outings since a season-opening loss to St. Xavier (IL).
Junior midfielder Maxi Viera (Motevideo, Uruguay) leads the RedStorm - who continue to play without regulars Richard Isberner and Oliver Hewitt-Fisher - in scoring with four goals, including a hat trick in Saturday's triumph over Daemen.
Junior forward Orlando Zapata (Medellin, Columbia) has three goals and an assist to his credit, while sophomore midlfielder Caio Cruz (Brazil) has one goal and a pair of assists.
Vanguard, which will also play Lindsey Wilson on Friday night as part of its eastward trek, is also coming off a win - a 2-0 victory over Soka University of America on Friday.
Veteran head coach Randy Dodge's team began the season 0-3-1 prior to the win, tying Grand Canyon College and suffering losses to Cal-Poly Pomona, Embry-Riddle and Kansas Wesleyan. The two goals in Friday's win were the first markers of the season for the Lions.
Senior midfielder Kyle O'Brien, a transfer from Southern Illinois University and an All-Golden State Athletic Conference selection last year after scoring seven goals and assisting on eight others, scored one of his team's goals in Friday's victory.
Freshman forward Luke Kadillak has one goal and an assist for the Lions, while sophomore midfielder Brandon Antonissen assisted on the other goal.
Rio Grande will complete its southern road swing on Friday afternoon at Mid-South Conference newcomer Cumberland (Tenn.) University.
