GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Thelma Gylfadottir scored a pair of goals, while Kasey Eberlein and Alyssa Malone added a goal and an assist each to help Davenport University pull away late for a 5-0 win over the University of Rio Grande, Tuesday night, in the season opener for both schools at DU Turf Field.
The Panthers, who also got a pair of assists from Karitas Elvarsdottir, snapped a scoreless tie just over 12 minutes into the second half and then erupted for four goals in the final 7-1/2 minutes of the match to win going away.    "We played pretty well for about 60 minutes," said Rio Grande head coach Callum Morris. "We had a breakdown that gave them their first goal and then we just fell apart over the last 7-1/2 minutes. The way we finished was very disappointing."
Davenport peppered Rio junior goalkeeper Hannah Stickelman (Ontario, OH) for 30 shots in the contest, while the RedStorm finished with just six shots - none of which were on goal.
Gylfadottir's first goal came at 57:05 off an assist from Malone and Paige Eli to give the hosts a 1-0 edge and that's how things stayed until a tumultuous stretch for the RedStorm to close out the match.
Eberlien's header into the net-via a feed from Elvarsdottir-made it 2-0 at the 82:35 mark and Gylfadottir scored on the rebound of an Eberlein shot blocked by Stickelman just under two minutes later to extend the cushion to 3-0.
Seventy-five seconds later, Rio saw the deficit grow to 4-0 when Mackenzie Vanderwarf took a pass from Malone and scored from the right wing.
Malone set the final score with just 32 seconds remaining, scoring on a ball that was initially deflected away by Stickelman. Elvarsdottir was credited with an assist.
Stickelman was credited with nine saves for the RedStorm.
Lexi Kruse and Michelle Marcus teamed for the shutout in goal for Davenport, with each playing one half.
Rio Grande returns to action Saturday afternoon, traveling to Union (Ky.) College for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
"We'll go back to the drawing board," Morris said. "Hopefully, we'll get things fixed."
