    RICHMOND, Ky. - Earlier this month, University of Rio Grande senior Cassie Mattia broke a 32-year-old school record in the women's 800-meter run.
    The new record didn't last nearly as long.    Mattia, a native of West Chester, Ohio, turned in a school-best time of 2:14.71 in her second place finish at last Saturday's Eastern Kentucky Open, hosted by Eastern Kentucky University.
    Two weeks ago at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio, Mattia finished in 2:14.94, bettering the previous school-best mark of 2:15.20 set by Rio Grande Athletic Hall of Famer Perri Martin in 1980.
    Mattia's showing helped the RedStorm post a sixth-place finish among the 16 teams in the women's division. Rio finished with 32 points as a team.
    Among the other performances for the Rio women were junior Kim Strunk (Milford, OH), who was third in the shot put with a toss of 12.11m, fifth in the discus throw at 34.74m and 14th in the hammer throw with an effort of 35.63m; freshman Samantha Barnes (Gallipolis, OH), who was fourth in the 800-meter run at 2:18.87; senior Kayla Renner (Galloway, OH), who was fifth in the 800 at 2:18.93; sophomore Mary Schramm (Marietta, OH), who was sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 38.98m, eighth in the javelin throw at 27.62, 14th in the discus throw at 31.47m and 19th in the shot put at 9.06m; freshman Kaitlyn Roberts (Vinton, OH), who placed sixth in the discus throw with a toss of 33.61m; junior Tracie Brown (Logan, OH), who took 10th place in the hammer throw with a heave of 37.82m and 15th in the discus throw at 31.39 m; freshman Renee Davis (Amsterdam, OH), who was 10th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.74 and 15th in the long jump at 4.53m; senior Cory Crutcher (Eaton, OH), who was 13th in the hammer throw with a toss of 35.67m; freshman Whittley Nelson (Cincinnati, OH), who grabbed 13th place in the triple jump with a leap of 9.64m and 17th in the long jump with an effort of 4.24m; freshman Brittany Piccone (Crooksville, OH), who was 21st in the 1500-meter run after finishing in 5:24.71; and senior Danielle Stockham (London, OH), who was 37th in the 800 with a time of 3:07.71
    In the men's division, senior Shaun Gunnell (Columbus, OH) had the top performance for the RedStorm with his second place showing in the shot put after a heave of 14.34m.
    Rio had 17 points to finish 11th among the 13 teams in the event. Bellarmine (140 pts.) posted the top score, with Eastern Kentucky (110) and Campbellsville (66.33) rounding out the top three.
    Others who represented the RedStorm on the men's side included sophomore Travontae Wilson (Mansfield, OH), who was fourth in the long jump at 6.33m; senior Matt Spencer (Pickerington, OH), who was seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.29; sophomore Kevin Malone (Waverly, OH), who was seventh in the 400-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 52.32; junior Chad McCarty (Tipp City, OH), who was 14th in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:11.36; and junior Joe Taranto (Pickerington, OH), who took 15th place in the 800 at 1:59.63.
