RedStorm women can't solve Houghton

Houghton, NY --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm women's soccer team did something that only one other team had accomplished this season versus Houghton College. Unfortunately it was not a victory as the RedStorm fell 3-1 to the Highlanders on Friday evening.

Rio Grande (1-11-1) could not end its current downward trend as the RedStorm lost for the ninth straight time.

Houghton (12-1-2) won for the sixth straight time. Houghton scored the first goal of the game in the 10th minute and would take the 1-0 advantage to halftime.

The Highlanders would add two goals in the second half to put the game away. The scores came in the 66th and 70th minutes respectively.

Rio would avoid the shutout with a goal from junior defender Erica Nagel (St. Mary's, OH) with just under three minutes to play. She was assisted by freshman forward Mallarie Lewis (Pataskala, OH)

The goal was only the second Houghton had surrendered all season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Bobbie Fitzpatrick (Cincinnati, OH), despite giving up all three goals, recorded 13 saves for the RedStorm in 77 minutes of action. Freshman Hannah Riffel (Circleville, OH) played the final minutes of the match and registered two saves.

Rio returned to action against Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
