CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Brian Grant scored seven of his 12 second half points during a 14-0 run which helped host Cedarville erase a one-point deficit and go on to a 75-67 win over the University of Rio Grande, Tuesday night, in men's basketball action at the Callan Athletic Center.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 11-7 with the win, while the RedStorm lost for the third straight time and the sixth time in seven outings in slipping to 10-11 overall.
Rio Grande scored the final four points of a tightly-contest first half - there were five ties and five lead changes - to take a 36-35 lead at the intermission.
But after the two teams traded buckets to begin the second stanza, Cedarville mounted its game-changing scoring spurt, half of which Grant was responsible for.
The RedStorm methodically chipped away at the 13-point deficit, though, and drew to within five, 63-58, following a jumper by sophomore center Makka Garba (Midlothian, VA) with 5:52 remaining. Unfortunately, that's as close as they would get.
An apparent held-ball situation on Cedarville's ensuing possession following the Garba bucket - which would have given Rio Grande the ball and the chance to get even closer - resulted as a foul against the RedStorm instead and also percipiated a technical foul against the Rio bench seconds later.
The Yellow Jackets hit two of the four free throw attempts that followed, stretching the lead back to seven. Rio narrowed the gap to six on three occasions in the final 3:20, but couldn't complete the comeback as Cedarville went 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the final 40.1 seconds to seal the victory.
Grant, who entered the game averaging 11.5 points per game, scored a game- and season-high 20 points to pace five double-digit scorers for the Yellow Jackets. He also had a team-best eight rebounds.
Zach Brown and Austin Foote added 15 and 12 points, respectively, in the win, while Zimmy Nwogbo tossed in 11 and Bryan Redic netted 10.
Junior center Dominick Haynes (Cleveland, OH) had a career-best 22 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to top a trio of players in double figures for Rio Grande. Junior forward Turrell Morris (Columbus, OH) had 22 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots, while senior forward Shaun Gunnell (Columbus, OH) finished with 12 points.
Tuesday's meeting was the 106th between the two programs, who were rivals dating back to their days in both the Mid-Ohio and America Mideast conferences. The win gave Cedarville a 54-52 edge in the all-time series.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday, wrapping up the non-conference portion of the 2011-12 schedule against West Virginia Tech at the Newt Oliver Arena. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
