RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande men's and women's basketball teams look to continue their winning ways tonight as the RedStorm hits the road for a Mid-South Conference battle with Georgetown (Ky.) College.
Tipoff for the women's game is set for 6 p.m., with the men's contest to follow at approximately 8 p.m.
Rio Grande is coming off a sweep of UVA-Wise at home on Saturday afternoon. The RedStorm women rolled to a 91-64 win over the Cavaliers, while the Rio men rallied late in regulation and went on to post a 93-83 win in overtime.
Senior guard Kaylee Helton (Lucasville, OH) scored 20 points to lead four double-digit scorers in Saturday's win for the Rio women. Junior guard Shardae Morrison-Fountain (Columbus, OH) had 16 points, while freshman forwards Tinesha Taylor (South Point, OH) and Janie Morris (Ironton, OH) had 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The RedStorm men were led in Saturday's overtime triumph by junior forward Turrell Morris (Columbus, OH) and sophomore guard Jermaine Warmack (Orange, NJ), both of whom scored 22 points. Morris, who also had 12 rebounds, scored 19 of his points in the second half and overtime session, including a pair of three-pointers in the final 30 seconds of regulation to force overtime.
Senior forward Shaun Gunnell (Columbus, OH) added 19 points and 13 rebounds in the win, while senior guard Brad Cubbie (Dayton, OH) finished with 11 points.
In tonight's opener, the Rio Grande women will be looking for a fourth straight MSC victory, but the job certainly won't be an easy one.
Georgetown brings a 12-6 record overall and a 5-2 mark in league play - not to mention a No. 18 ranking in the latest NAIA Division I coaches poll - into the contest. First-year head coach Andrea McCloskey's team has lost two straight and three of its last four, though, including an 88-73 setback at Lindsey Wilson on Saturday.
McCloskey is a 2002 graduate of Rio Grande. She played for Rio head coach David Smalley from 2000-02, appearing in 79 games over three seasons, before joining Smalley's staff as a graduate assistant for three seasons.
McCloskey's Tigers are led by sophomore guard Andrea Howard (5-10), who averages 14.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Senior guard Jessica Waddle (5-9) leads three other GC players who average 10 or more points per game at 10.9, while freshman guard Devon Golden (5-10) and freshman forward Dev King (6-0) check in at 10.6 ppg and 10.2 ppg, respectively.
King and Golden both average over seven rebounds per outing as well.
Helton leads Rio Grande (13-5, 4-2) at 16.9 points per game, while Morrison-Fountain averages 15.3 points per game. The RedStorm received four points in this week's coaches' poll.
In the nightcap, the RedStorm men are also dealing with a nationally-ranked foe.
Georgetown is No. 7 in the latest coaches poll released Monday. The Tigers (15-3, 6-1) are still stinging from a 79-78 loss at Lindsey Wilson on Saturday - a game in which the Blue Raiders' Chase Spreen nailed a 70-foot heave as time expired to give the home team the win.
First-year head coach Chris Briggs' squad is led by MSC Player of the Year candidate Maurice Pearson. The 6-foot-9 senior forward/center, who averages 19.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, ranks in the top 10 in five individual statistical categories and is second in the country in field goal percentage (.669).
Three other Georgetown starters are also in double figures for the season. Senior forward Jordan DeMercy (6-7), who recently returned from injury, averages 13.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, while junior guard Garel Craig (6-3) and senior guard Johonne Hamilton (6-1) are scoring 11.7 and 11.0 points per game, respectively.
Rio Grande (10-8, 2-4) is led by Morris at 16.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per outing. Gunnell and Warmack average 13.4 points and 12.7 points, respectively.
